Man Arrested after Scaling Big Ben with Palestinian Flag
A man who climbed London’s Big Ben with a Palestinian flag and spent the day perched on the clock tower was arrested after coming down Sunday. London’s Metropolitan Police arrested the man following a “protracted incident” that started early Saturday.
Despite negotiators urging him to come down, the man remained perched barefoot on a ledge several meters up the landmark. Negotiators expressed concerns over an injury to his foot, and footage showed him refusing to come down, saying he would do so on his own terms.
Supporters gathered at the scene, chanting “Free Palestine” and “you are a hero”. The area was closed off by police, with Westminster Bridge closed and tours at the Houses of Parliament canceled.
Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty questioned how the man was able to evade security and called for a full explanation to MPs and staff. This incident comes after pro-Palestinian protesters sprayed messages on the lawn of US President Donald Trump’s golf resort in Scotland. Police are investigating the damage.
