Fires break out in New York City as strong winds fuel flames

Brush fires have broken out in Long Island and near Brooklyn due to strong winds creating an elevated risk of fire spread in New York on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The region impacted by the elevated fire risk includes southeastern New York state, northern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in Long Island’s Suffolk County due to brush fires in the Pine Barrens.

Suffolk County is the site of four wildfires, with three fully contained and the largest one being 2 miles long and more than 2 miles wide. Two people sustained injuries, and two structures were damaged. The cause of the fires is unknown at this time. Additionally, video on social media showed plumes of smoke billowing from a fire in Brooklyn’s Gerritsen Beach area. The fire was under control by early evening and no injuries were reported.

State resources, including New York National Guard helicopter crews, were assigned to help firefighters on the ground. Wind advisories were in effect, with gusts of up to 30 mph expected to last through Sunday. The weather service warned residents to exercise caution with any potential ignition sources due to unusually dry conditions. The cause of the fires is still unknown, and there have been no reported injuries.
