‘Republicans and Democrats unite to defeat anti-trans legislation in Montana, saying ‘Stop these crazy bills”

In a surprising turn of events, Republican lawmakers in Montana joined forces to defeat two extreme anti-trans bills after powerful speeches from two trans representatives. State representative Zooey Zephyr spoke out against a bill that sought to ban drag performances and Pride parades in Montana, emphasizing the importance of drag as an art form and rejecting the notion that her life was a fetish. Another bill aimed to remove transgender children from their parents, which representative SJ Howell passionately opposed, highlighting the tragic consequences of such actions. The bills were both defeated by a majority vote, with multiple Republicans crossing party lines to support Democrats. This move was seen as a positive step in the fight against discriminatory legislation that negatively impacts trans and gender-nonconforming individuals.

The defeat of these bills in Montana comes as part of a larger trend across the United States, with 696 bills currently under consideration in 49 states that would negatively impact trans individuals. Texas, Missouri, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Connecticut are among the states with the most anti-trans policy initiatives. At the federal level, there are 25 active anti-trans bills covering various categories, including healthcare, student athletics, the military, incarceration, and education. The efforts to combat these harmful bills have seen some success, with 18 bills passed so far this year, following an unprecedented 87 in 2024.

The collaborative effort to defeat the anti-trans bills in Montana serves as a beacon of hope for the transgender community, showing that bipartisan support and advocacy can make a difference in challenging discriminatory legislation. It also highlights the importance of building relationships and raising awareness among lawmakers to create positive change for marginalized communities.
