Australia hit by ex-cyclone, leading to massive power outages | National News

Ex-Cyclone Alfred, now downgraded to a tropical depression, wreaked havoc along the coast of eastern Australia, leaving more than 330,000 homes and businesses without power. The storm brought gale-force winds, heavy rainfall, and widespread flooding to a 400-kilometre stretch of the coast between southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales. Utility companies are working to restore power to the affected areas, but repairs may be hampered by ongoing floods.

Authorities have issued evacuation orders for 16,200 people in New South Wales, where 30 flood rescues have been carried out in the past 24 hours. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese cautioned against complacency, emphasizing that the risks associated with the storm remain serious.

While the city of Lismore, which was hit by deadly floods in 2022, was spared from overflowing rivers, other areas continue to face challenges from the aftermath of the storm. Despite the destruction and widespread damage caused by Ex-Cyclone Alfred, residents remain resilient, focusing on safety rather than material possessions.
