Fishing enthusiasts in Montana have been enjoying a successful ice fishing season on various lakes across the state. Flathead Lake has been experiencing a great Laker bite, with anglers having success using dead baits or casting swim baits at depths of 10 to 30 feet. Smith Lake still has over 12 inches of ice, with slow fishing but reports of catching Pike and Perch.
Bitteroot Lake has 6-8 inches of ice with variable conditions, but anglers are finding decent Perch action and a few Kokanee at the south end in depths of about 140 feet. Lower Thompson Lake also has 8+ inches of ice, with Salmon being caught at depths of 60 to 80 feet, along with good Perch at 15 to 30 feet.
Lake Mary Ronan has 8+ inches of ice, with a good perch bite at 20-foot depths but a slowdown in Kokanee fishing. Ashley Lake has 6-8 inches of ice, where anglers are catching Kokanee off the west shore using Halis and Swedish Pimples at 80 feet. Blanchard Lake has 8+ inches of ice and a good Pike bite using TipUps.
Despite the thickness of the ice on these lakes, the reminder is clear: “No Ice is Safe Ice.” Anglers are encouraged to use caution and always be aware of changing ice conditions on Montana’s beautiful lakes. Stay safe and enjoy the winter fishing season on the ice!
