Partisan Divide in Montana Poll Results of Satisfaction

A recent Montana Free Press-Eagleton poll of over 900 residents statewide found that Montana Republicans are more satisfied with the state government’s handling of wildlife, the environment, transportation infrastructure, and public safety compared to Democrats. The survey, conducted by Rutgers University’s Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling, revealed that Republicans were satisfied with the state’s management of nine out of 13 key political issues listed, while Democrats expressed dissatisfaction with 10. Republicans, who hold a majority in the Montana Legislature, differed from Democrats on issues such as abortion access and Medicaid expansion.

Both Republicans and Democrats expressed dissatisfaction with property taxes, cost of living, mental health and addiction, and state income taxes. Property taxes for median residential properties in Montana have increased by 21% in 2023, prompting bipartisan agreement on the need for solutions. Both parties also agreed on concerns about the cost of living, with nearly half of Montanans expressing worries about affording housing in the next five years.

The poll also found that Montanans from both parties prioritize issues such as housing affordability, health care, groceries, child care, and education costs. Young adults and those making less than $50,000 a year reported more difficulty affording day-to-day expenses. Regardless of political affiliation, respondents believe that state and local governments share responsibility for ensuring affordable and safe housing for families. Overall, the poll provided valuable insights into Montanans’ attitudes towards various issues and their expectations from the state government.
