British tennis star Emma Raducanu recently revealed that she was so distraught after seeing her stalker in the stands during a match in Dubai that she wasn’t sure if she could finish the game. The former U.S. Open champion was visibly upset when she spotted the man fixated on her during her match against Karolina Muchova. Raducanu broke down in tears and needed to take a moment to compose herself before continuing the match, which she eventually lost. The man had been present at her previous matches in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, and had even approached her off-court in Dubai before the match, causing her distress.
Dubai Police detained the man and he signed a restraining order agreeing to keep his distance from Raducanu. Although she decided not to press charges, the man has been banned from future WTA tournaments. Following the incident, Raducanu received overwhelming support from her fans and decided to return to the tour for the Indian Wells tournament in California with enhanced security.
The 22-year-old tennis player, who won the U.S. Open in 2021 at the age of 18, expressed gratitude for the support she received and emphasized the importance of player safety. Despite the difficult experience in Dubai, Raducanu is determined to continue competing and will face Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in the first round of Indian Wells, with a potential match against Coco Gauff in the third round. She expressed relief at being back on the court and feeling better after taking a break following the distressing incident.
