Trump halts military aid to Ukraine following recent dispute with Zelenskyy in Oval Office

The Trump administration has paused military aid to Ukraine in response to President Zelenskyy’s lack of gratitude for U.S. aid and allegations of disrespect. The move follows a contentious Oval Office meeting last week, where Trump accused Zelenskyy of overplaying his hand and seeking conflict over peace. The State Department reported providing $65.9 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Trump had falsely blamed Ukraine for the conflict and called Zelenskyy a dictator, leading to strained relations.

Despite the aid pause, Zelenskyy expressed willingness to sign a deal granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals and salvage the relationship with the U.S. Senate Republicans hoped a deal could still be reached to continue assistance to Ukraine and facilitate peace with Russia. European leaders, including the British Prime Minister and the European Commission President, reiterated their support for Ukraine following Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington.

Critics, including Senator Susan Collins, called the aid pause ill-timed and damaging, while House Speaker Mike Johnson supported Trump’s decision. The Trump administration, through a White House official, stated that aid is being reviewed to ensure it contributes to a solution. The consensus among lawmakers appears to be that efforts should be redoubled to support Ukraine during this critical time.
