Irish historian Dr. Maxine Keoghan recently embarked on a journey to Helena, Montana to explore the legacy of Irish patriot Thomas Francis Meagher. Meagher, a native of Waterford, had a tumultuous life that saw him involved in rebellion, exile, and eventually serving as acting governor of Montana. Keoghan was curious to see how Meagher was honored in this distant corner of the United States.
Upon arriving at the state capitol, Keoghan was struck by the statue of Meagher standing proudly in front of the grand building. The inscription on the statue highlighted Meagher’s role as an Irish Patriot, Civil War General, and Acting Governor of Montana Territory. Keoghan also visited a nearby history center where she learned more about Meagher’s influence on the Irish immigrants in Montana, particularly during the mining boom.
Keoghan left Helena with a sense of pride, feeling inspired by Meagher’s enduring legacy and the impact he had on bridging cultures and continents. The experience reinforced the importance of fighting for freedom and justice, no matter where that struggle may take place.
