Montana Makes History with Travis DeCuire and Bobby Hauck

The University of Montana is currently in the unique position of having the school’s all-time winningest coaches in football and men’s basketball coaching simultaneously. Travis DeCuire became the winningest men’s basketball coach with his 222nd victory, surpassing George “Jiggs” Dahlberg. Bobby Hauck has been the winningest football coach since 2018.

This is only the fourth time in history that UM has had both the football and men’s basketball coaches as the all-time winningest coaches. The last time this happened was in the late 1940s with Dahlberg and football coach Doug Fessenden. Dahlberg, a UM alum, held the basketball coaching record since the mid-1940s, while Fessenden became the football coach’s record holder in 1938.

DeCuire played basketball for the Grizzlies in the 1990s and achieved his record-breaking win in just 11 seasons. On the other hand, Hauck, a former Griz track and field athlete, achieved his record in his 13 seasons as head coach. Both coaches have surpassed the records set by their predecessors and have made history at UM.

In addition to DeCuire and Hauck, the Griz have had two other instances where the wins leader in football and men’s basketball coached simultaneously. This historic moment highlights the success and legacy of UM’s athletics program and showcases the talented coaches leading the teams to victory.
