Rescuers have successfully recovered the final body from the site of an avalanche that hit a construction camp in a remote area of northern India, bringing the total death toll to eight. The avalanche struck near Mana village on the border with Tibet in Uttarakhand, burying more than 50 workers under snow and debris. The army, with the help of drone-based detection systems and rescue dogs, conducted a marathon operation in sub-zero temperatures to search for survivors.
Survivor Anil, who was buried by the avalanche, described the harrowing experience and expressed gratitude for the rescue efforts that saved his life. Many workers were fast asleep in steel containers when the avalanche hit, causing panic and chaos as they tried to escape. The incident highlights the dangers faced by workers in the Himalayan region, where avalanches and landslides are common, exacerbated by climate change and rapid development.
The tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks associated with working in such harsh conditions and the need for enhanced safety measures to prevent future disasters in the area.
