President Donald Trump has ordered nearly 3,000 additional active-duty troops to be sent to the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to crack down on illegal immigration. The troops, including a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion, will provide transportation, engineering support, and detection and monitoring. They will not be involved in deportation operations. Already, there are about 9,200 U.S. troops at the southern border, including 5,000 National Guard troops under governors’ control. The Pentagon stated that the new troops will help “seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States.” Trump aims to expand the military’s role in shutting down the border and sending detained migrants back to their home countries. Troops have been intermittently deployed to the border since the 1990s to address migration, drug trafficking, and other criminal activities. This new deployment comes as Trump continues his campaign promise to strengthen border security.
