Montana Governor Greg Gianforte and Democratic challenger Ryan Busse faced off in a heated debate hosted by ABC/ Fox-affiliate NonStop Local. The candidates clashed over issues such as affordable housing, child care, access to health care, and property taxes.
Gianforte touted his administration’s use of federal pandemic relief funds to invest in child care and behavioral health care, leading to a $3 billion budget surplus. However, Busse criticized Gianforte for giving tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires instead of using the surplus to benefit lower-income households.
The candidates also sparred over Medicaid coverage, homelessness, abortion rights, and public lands management. Gianforte defended his pro-life stance and anti-abortion legislation, while Busse argued for protecting abortion rights and increasing access to low-income housing tax credits.
In recent polling, Gianforte held a significant lead over Busse, with the election scheduled for November 5. Absentee voting is already underway.
Despite their differences, both candidates emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of Montana residents and managing the state’s resources effectively. Voters will have the opportunity to choose their next governor based on these competing visions for Montana’s future.
