Analysts Say China is Developing a Mammoth Aircraft Carrier to Rival the Largest in the U.S. Fleet

China has not officially confirmed the development of a new supercarrier, but satellite images suggest the country may be working on one. The U.S. has openly discussed China as a peer competitor with the capability and intent to threaten American interests in the Pacific. The new Chinese design seems to feature electromagnetic catapults similar to those on American supercarriers.

The module seen in Dalian, China indicates that the electromagnetic catapults may be too close together, causing potential issues. China has been moving towards building a nuclear-powered supercarrier to rival those of the United States, and has already built a prototype naval reactor for a large surface warship. China has expressed ambitions for a blue-water navy to compete with the U.S. carrier development.

Military analysts in China believe the country should aim for one or two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, while also considering unmanned carriers with a focus on drone attacks. The Chinese Embassy spokesperson emphasized that China’s national defense policy is purely defensive in nature and that the country does not engage in an arms race. China aims to safeguard world peace and stability while countering any threats or challenges.
