Sheriff’s Office creating public service announcements to educate non-English speakers on road regulations

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office is addressing the issue of language barriers during traffic stops by creating public service announcements (PSAs) to educate non-English speakers on road laws. Deputy sheriff Garrett Paakkonen, who encounters tourists speaking different languages in West Yellowstone, explains the challenges of communication during traffic stops. The office has been using Montana Language Services and pocket translators to overcome this barrier, but they are not always reliable. Recognizing the growing diversity in the community, Sergeant Michael Van Meter and his team sought assistance from KBZK to create PSAs in various languages to educate people on road safety.

The PSAs cover topics such as reacting to emergency lights, dealing with getting pulled over, and responding to citations. The goal is to educate rather than penalize individuals for not understanding road laws due to language barriers. The Sheriff’s Office plans to release these videos for the Spanish-speaking community first, with hopes of expanding to other languages in the future. The PSAs will be available on the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office website and social media platforms.
