Tencent Holdings, the operator of China’s most popular super app, Weixin, is currently testing the integration of DeepSeek’s AI service into the platform. This move is part of Tencent’s broader strategy to use artificial intelligence to enhance its suite of services from social networking to e-payments and ride-hailing.
In the beta test, users can access the “AI Search” option on the search bar within Weixin to utilize DeepSeek, alongside Tencent’s Hunyuan foundational model. Currently, this feature is not available on WeChat, the overseas version of the app.
DeepSeek-R1, an open-source reasoning model released by the Hangzhou-based start-up on January 20, has gained attention for its capabilities comparable to more advanced AI models from other tech giants but at significantly lower training costs.
The integration of DeepSeek into Weixin would provide 1.3 billion active users with access to AI capabilities, offering a more diverse search experience. Users engage with Weixin for various purposes such as chatting, sharing documents, watching videos, transferring funds, and shopping.
This move highlights Tencent’s commitment to leveraging AI technology to enhance user experience and offer innovative solutions within its super app ecosystem. The integration of DeepSeek has the potential to revolutionize the way users interact with Weixin and access information, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the platform.
