Three journalists in Turkey detained for Istanbul prosecutor story, reports national news

Several journalists from the left-leaning BirGun newspaper were detained under anti-terror legislation in Turkey over a story related to Istanbul’s chief prosecutor. The journalists were taken from their homes for “targeting individuals engaged in counterterrorism efforts”, according to the editor-in-chief of BirGun. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Turkey’s main opposition CHP party denounced the detentions, calling them unjustified attempts to intimidate the press and society.

The trio was released after appearing in court but were not formally arrested. The arrests sparked protests with demonstrators holding up signs in support of the journalists and condemning the actions of the authorities. The incident is the latest in a series of crackdowns on media freedom in Turkey, where journalists critical of the government have faced legal probes and detentions.

The detention of the journalists was described as “an unprecedented disgrace” by opposition leader Ozgur Ozel. Human rights groups have raised concerns over the increasing number of journalists in prison in Turkey, with many facing charges related to their reporting.
