Montana Writers Discuss State’s Notorious Political Figure and Archaeology

Historian Marc Johnson will be discussing his book on Senator Burton K. Wheeler at a book talk event in Helena next month as part of the Montana Historical Society’s lecture series. Wheeler, described as one of the most powerful politicians Montana ever produced, rose to prominence amid antiwar and labor unrest in Butte during World War I. Johnson will delve into Wheeler’s life and his impact on American history during the event at Touchmark on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

In addition to Johnson’s book talk, author and University of Montana professor Douglas MacDonald will be discussing his book on the archaeology of Montana’s First Peoples at the Lewis & Clark Library on Thursday, Jan. 16. The event will explore the origins of the region’s first inhabitants and the routes they took to settle there.

For those interested in exploring history in person, the Original Governor’s Mansion will be offering free guided tours on Thursday, Dec. 26, and Saturday, Dec. 28. The mansion, decorated for the holiday season, will have surprises for visitors of all ages.

For more information on these events, including the book talks and mansion tours, contact Darby Bramble at [email protected]. The Montana Historical Society continues to offer educational opportunities for those interested in the rich history of the state.
