Vincent Lemark Burrell, a Georgia man, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fights and abusing animals. The case began when an Amazon delivery worker reported seeing dogs tied up with heavy chains on Burrell’s property. A search in November 2022 revealed 107 dogs, mostly pit bulls, with signs of abuse. Dogs were found underweight and restrained with logging chains, a tactic used to build dog aggression. Evidence linking Burrell to dog fighting included a treadmill for dogs, a breeding stand, and a break stick. A veterinarian found signs of removed teeth and scars from fighting on some of the dogs. The dogs were rescued and taken in by a nonprofit organization. Among them was Baby Shark, intended for illegal fighting before being rescued. Burrell was convicted on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of animal cruelty by a jury. Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci sentenced him to the maximum penalty allowed by law. Burrell denies involvement in dog fighting, but was given the longest known sentence for such crimes. It is unclear whether he will appeal. The case was prosecuted by state animal crimes resource prosecutor Jessica K. Rock, who praised the judge for imposing the maximum sentence.
