Tribal Leaders in Montana Advocate for Reinstatement of Health Department Position

Tribal leaders from across Montana recently testified at a legislative hearing to advocate for the reinstatement of the tribal relations manager position within the state Department of Public Health and Human Services. The position, which had previously served as a valuable link between tribal governments and the state, was left vacant and eventually removed after the retirement of Lesa Evers in 2023.

Proponents of reinstating the position, including Anna Whiting Sorrell and Joe Durglo, emphasized the importance of having direct communication channels between tribes and the state government. They pointed out that since Evers’ departure, tribes have struggled with obtaining information and navigating the state department.

Many tribal leaders expressed frustration and a lack of communication after Evers retired. Maria Roundstone, an enrolled citizen of Northern Cheyenne, highlighted the importance of reinstating the position to maintain effective government-to-government relations.

During her time as tribal relations manager, Evers prioritized open and honest communication with tribal governments, creating pathways for dialogue and collaboration. She outlined her efforts to establish relationships with every tribe in Montana, highlighting the value of face-to-face interactions and proactive engagement.

The Montana American Indian Caucus has advocated for the reinstatement of the position to strengthen communication between tribal nations and the state government. Republican state Sen. Dennis Lenz expressed confusion over why the position was eliminated, and all members of the Caucus condemned the decision.

Efforts to reinstate the tribal relations manager position reflect a broader push for improved government-to-government relations and communication between tribes and the state of Montana.
