Democratic Senator Brian Schatz blocks approval of Trump’s State Department nominees

Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii has placed a “blanket hold” on President Trump’s nominees for the State Department in protest of the shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Schatz criticized Trump and his adviser Elon Musk for attempting to dismantle USAID, calling it illegal and dangerous. The hold on nominees forces Republicans to use more time and effort to confirm them in the Senate. Democratic lawmakers gathered outside USAID to denounce the shutdown and accused Trump and Musk of bypassing Congress. Holds on nominees have been used in the past by both Republicans and Democrats to protest policies and actions of the administration. The Trump administration has nominees for some key positions within the State Department, but many ambassadorships and assistant secretary positions are still vacant. Current acting leaders in these positions do not have the same authority as those nominated by the president. Overall, Schatz’s hold on nominees is a response to what he sees as a constitutional crisis and an attempt by the billionaire class to take over the government for self-interest.
