Flathead Electric Cooperative’s Roundup for Safety program recently awarded $36,375 in grants to support community safety projects proposed by seven local nonprofit organizations. One of the recipients, the Coram-West Glacier Volunteer Fire District, received $10,000 toward replacing handheld radios crucial for communication along a 55-mile stretch of U.S. 2. Chief John Gillespie highlighted the challenges of coordinating with different agencies due to varying frequencies and emphasized the importance of effective communication in emergency operations.
The Roundup for Safety Board of Directors also matched $10,000 in funds towards the radio project, which will cost a total of $20,000. Other grantees included organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Crown Gravity Collective, North Valley Food Bank, North Valley Music School, Flathead High School, and Bigfork Senior Center, receiving funds for various safety-related initiatives.
Funding for Roundup for Safety comes from participating Flathead Electric Cooperative members who round up their monthly electric bills to the nearest dollar. Since 1997, the program has provided over $5 million in funding for community safety projects. To learn more about the program and its impact, visit Flathead Electric Cooperative’s website.
