Missoula School Board Propels Forward with Updated Smartphone Policy

The Missoula County Public Schools board recently advanced a new policy regulating student use of cell phones and personal electronic devices at school. The policy, informed by a survey of staff, students, and parents, largely bans smartphone use in the classroom with some exceptions. The proposed policy states that the district supports the use of electronics and the internet for learning, but recommends that students not bring cell phones to school. Under the new policy, elementary and middle school students are prohibited from using phones and devices throughout the instructional day, while high school students can use devices before and after school, during lunch, and passing periods. The policy also allows for some flexibility, such as allowing middle school teachers to use devices for instruction with approval. The board approved moving forward with option two for high schools, which prohibits device use during instructional time. The public can submit comments on the amended policy before the board votes on it again in March.
