UM strives to move forward following marching band controversy | News

University of Montana Alumni Band joined the Grizzly Marching Band during the Homecoming game at halftime on Sept. 30. However, controversy arose during the Brawl of the Wild game when the Montana State University marching band was not invited. The Grizzly Marching Band received an email on game day informing them that their playing time would be shortened in favor of pre-recorded music. This led to backlash from fans and a viral leaked message from the band director, Kevin Griggs, identifying Nic Hallisey as the one behind the decision. Hallisey apologized for the late notice but defended the decision to engage the crowd. Social media backlash, including a petition with over 8,000 signatures for better treatment of the band, ensued.
Despite the controversy, UM Athletics defended their decision, stating last-minute changes are common and unavoidable. The marching band members, while appreciating the online support, were upset that Griggs’ email leaked, but they acknowledged the need to move forward professionally. UM Athletics and the band director later released statements expressing appreciation for the marching band, and plans for future games were discussed in meetings between the band and athletics. Moving forward, playtime for the marching band will largely remain unchanged, with UM Athletics having the final say on any last-minute changes. The situation was described as a learning opportunity to improve communication and dialogue between the band and athletics to prevent similar incidents in the future.
