A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco has found that regular exercise can help protect against cognitive decline in older adults. The study, published in the journal Neurology, followed over 1,200 adults with an average age of 73 for six years.

Participants who reported engaging in moderate to high levels of physical activity were found to have a lower risk of developing cognitive impairment compared to those who were less active. The researchers also found that the protective effects of exercise were particularly strong for participants who carried a gene linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Lead researcher Dr. Paul A. Aisen emphasized the importance of physical activity in maintaining brain health as we age. He stated, “The findings suggest that the beneficial effects of physical activity on brain health are substantial, even if you start exercising later in life.”

The study adds to a growing body of research that highlights the importance of regular exercise for both physical and cognitive health. Previous studies have shown that physical activity can help improve memory, reasoning, and overall brain function.

With an aging population and an increasing prevalence of age-related cognitive disorders, the findings of this study underscore the importance of incorporating regular exercise into daily routines to support brain health in older adults. As Dr. Aisen concluded, “It’s never too late to start exercising and reap the benefits for your brain.”
