Montana House rejects bill targeting major wolf population reduction

Montana lawmakers recently debated a controversial bill, House Bill 222, that proposed unlimited wolf hunting until the population dropped below 650 animals statewide. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Lukas Schubert, ultimately failed to pass on a bipartisan vote. Supporters argued that reducing the wolf population was necessary for wildlife management, while opponents raised concerns about the impact on the ecosystem and the potential negative effects on Montana’s efforts to manage other wildlife, such as grizzly bears.

The proposal would have allowed for open wolf hunting season until the target population level was reached, with a provision to protect denning wolves in May and June. Despite a reported wolf population of around 1,100 animals in Montana, the bill failed to garner enough support in the House of Representatives. The rejection of HB 222 highlights the ongoing debate over wildlife management practices and the role of hunting in maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
