Legislators unveil proposal to boost initial teacher salary

In a recent hearing before the House Education Committee, proponents of the STARS Act in Montana are pushing for much-needed reforms in public school funding. The bill aims to address the dire financial realities facing schools, particularly in the realm of teacher pay. Educators and students highlighted the challenges of recruiting and retaining teachers due to low wages and high living costs, painting a bleak picture of the current state of affairs in Montana schools.

Republican Governor Greg Gianforte has pledged $100 million to the legislation, signaling strong support for improving teacher pay. The proposed bill, HB 252, seeks to double state payments to districts based on the number of full-time qualified staff employed, with incentives to increase average teacher pay.

During the hearing, lawmakers and educators emphasized the need for increased funding to attract and retain quality teachers, as well as the importance of incentivizing student outcomes. While there were concerns raised about the impact on union-negotiated pay scales for more experienced teachers, overall support for the bill was strong.

If the STARS Act clears the House Education Committee, it will move to the House floor for a vote. The proposed legislation represents a significant step towards improving the financial stability of Montana’s public schools and ensuring a higher quality of education for students.
