Montana’s Head Start program stays open despite closure worries

MISSOULA, Mont. — In a recent town hall meeting, Head Start, a nonprofit organization providing child care and kindergarten readiness for low-income families, reassured families that their services would not be affected by the Trump administration’s freeze on federal grants and loans. The announcement came after an initial scare that the program would have to close indefinitely in five Montana counties due to the federal memo.

Executive Director Isaac Triance assured attendees that Head Start funding is not impacted by the federal action. Despite experiencing difficulties accessing payment processing systems on Tuesday, the organization confirmed at the meeting that they are up and running and not affected long-term.

One attendee, Tiffaney Randles, shared how the organization had positively impacted her 3-year-old grandson’s development and expressed plans to write to her congressman to ensure the program’s continued funding.

Triance informed attendees that Head Start currently has funding for the foreseeable future. While the situation remains stable for now, NBC Montana will continue to monitor any potential local impacts from the federal funding freeze.
