The University of Montana Grizzlies finished the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and secured the 14 seed in the 2024 FCS playoffs. Despite being the preseason favorite after winning the crown last year, they ended up fifth in the Big Sky Conference standings. They will be facing off against Tennessee State, a team that finished in a four-way tie for first place in their conference. The winner of this first-round game will go on to play South Dakota State in the second round.
During the game, Montana’s defense proved strong, forcing multiple three-and-outs and sacks, keeping their opponent to only 77 total yards of offense. Running back Eli Gillman made history by becoming the ninth player in Griz history to reach 2,000 career rushing yards. Kicker Ty Morrison had a standout game, going 3 of 4 on field goal attempts, including a career-long 50-yarder.
Despite some missed opportunities and turnovers, Montana dominated the game, ending the first half with a 16-3 lead. The Grizzlies will be looking to continue their success in the playoffs and advance through the tournament.
