Tragedy struck in Laurel as two hunters, Ray Bernard Wells and James Rheinhart Horton, were found dead after going missing on a hunting trip. The men, both 71 years old, had left Laurel on Wednesday morning to hunt on private land. They were believed to be on or near interim chief administrative officer Kurt Markegard’s family property. The search for the missing hunters involved multiple agencies, friends, and family, with the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department, Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, and the Air National Guard assisting. The hunters were eventually located with the help of helicopters, as their vehicle had rolled down a ravine. Markegard, a personal friend of Horton, praised the coordinated effort of the various agencies in the search. Laurel Fire Chief JW Hopper commended the searchers’ dedication, highlighting the challenging terrain that they had to navigate. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with hunting in remote areas and the importance of safety precautions.
