The Groucho Club’s Ascent to Fame and Subsequent Decline | UK News

Famous London nightclub, The Groucho Club, known for attracting celebrities and glitterati, has faced a suspension of its license by Westminster City Council following a request from the Metropolitan Police. While the reason for this closure remains undisclosed due to apparent serious criminal offences, the club has a history of past allegations. The club was established in 1985 as a more inclusive and contemporary alternative to traditional gentlemen’s clubs, becoming a hotspot for celebrities like Rod Stewart, Liam Gallagher, and Keira Knightley. Membership to the club was known for being exclusive, with stories from inside becoming legendary, including encounters with Bill Clinton and unique rules for behavior within the club.

Overseeing the club’s operations was Bernie Katz, famously known as the “Prince of Soho,” who maintained discretion and privacy for members. However, Katz’s retirement marked the beginning of a decline for the club, with veteran members expressing concerns over drug use and a loss of its unique atmosphere. Following ownership changes and increased membership fees, the club faced further criticism and complaints from members. Ultimately, the company was bought by Artfarm for a reported £40 million in 2022. As the club faces challenges and criticisms, many are mourning the loss of its former allure and exclusivity.
