Police say Colorado dentist sought to kill detective investigating wife’s poisoning

New charges have been filed against Colorado dentist James Craig, who is accused of fatally poisoning his wife’s protein shakes. The new charges focus on Craig’s alleged attempts to kill a detective involved in the case. Craig was previously charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Angela, and has pleaded not guilty to that charge. Last week, a solicitation to commit first-degree murder charge was filed against him, along with a charge of solicitation to commit perjury.

According to reports, Craig was in jail with an inmate twice who he allegedly tried to get to murder the detective. The detective in question had worked on the investigation into Angela Craig’s death. Authorities initially believed she died from poisoning by arsenic and cyanide, but the coroner later attributed it to a combination of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a medication found in eye drops.

Investigators have pointed to Craig’s internet search history, which included information on whether arsenic was detectable in an autopsy, as well as his online purchase of potassium cyanide. Craig’s business partner flagged the purchase as suspicious, leading to authorities being notified. Despite evidence against him, Craig’s defense lawyer initially argued there was no direct evidence showing his client poisoned his wife’s drink.

The lawyer withdrew from the case last week, just before jury selection was set to begin. The lawyer cited concerns over his client’s actions, and jury selection has been indefinitely postponed as a result. Craig currently faces multiple charges related to his wife’s death and the alleged solicitation to commit murder and perjury.
