Tommy Mellott, the senior quarterback for the Montana State Bobcats, has been named the offensive player of the year by the Big Sky Conference for 2024. Mellott led his team to an impressive 12-0 regular season record, clinching the Big Sky title and the top seed in the FCS playoffs. This honor makes him the first Bobcat to win the award since 2012.
Throughout the season, Mellott showcased his skills by completing 68.5% of his passes for nearly 2,000 yards, along with 22 touchdowns and only one interception. Additionally, he rushed for 640 yards and scored 11 rushing touchdowns. Mellott’s performance was praised not just for his running abilities but also for his passing game and decision-making skills.
In addition to Mellott’s recognition, head coach Brent Vigen received the Big Sky coach of the year award, while MSU defensive end Brody Grebe was named defensive player of the year and Adam Jones received the freshman of the year award.
Mellott, who was previously a second-team selection, is also a finalist for the 2024 Walter Payton Award, which is given to the FCS offensive player of the year. The Big Sky Conference coaches voted for these honors, with rules in place that prevented them from voting for their own team members.
