As winter nears, Montana residents must be mindful of open burning regulations to prevent air quality issues. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) closely monitors atmospheric conditions during the winter months to ensure safe burning practices.
In the western burn zone, open burning is allowed from December 1 to the end of February with a permit, including slash piles and yard waste. Residents in counties like Lincoln, Flathead, and Missoula must submit a Wintertime Open Burning Request form for approval based on air quality and ventilation rates.
Different rules apply to counties like Lewis and Clark and Yellowstone, as well as tribal lands. In the eastern burn zone, residents must notify the DEQ before burning wood and plant material. Prohibited items include plastics, treated wood, and hazardous materials.
Residents are encouraged to check with their local air quality agency for specific rules before starting any fires and to obtain the necessary permits. More information on permissible materials and regulations can be found on the DEQ website.
