China’s ByteDance is suing a former intern for $1.1 million, alleging he intentionally attacked their artificial intelligence large language model training infrastructure. This case has sparked interest in China’s competitive AI landscape. The parent company of TikTok is seeking damages from the intern, Tian Keyu, in a lawsuit filed with the Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing. While legal disputes between companies and employees are common in China, suing an intern for such a large amount is unusual. The case is significant because it focuses on AI LLM training, a technology that has global interest due to advances in generative AI. ByteDance has declined to comment on the lawsuit, and Tian, a Peking University postgraduate student, has not responded to inquiries. Tian is accused of sabotaging the team’s model training tasks through code manipulation and unauthorized changes. ByteDance stated in a social media post that they dismissed the intern in August. Rumors suggesting that the case cost ByteDance millions of dollars in losses and involved over 8,000 graphics processing units were dismissed as exaggerated by the company.
