The long-awaited announcement of the 2024 NCAA Division I Football Championship field has finally been made, with 24 teams set to compete for the coveted title. This year marks the first time in history that 16 teams have been seeded in the bracket, each earning the opportunity to host their first playoff game.
The top eight teams receiving byes in the tournament are led by Montana State (12-0) as the top seed, followed by North Dakota State (10-2) and South Dakota State (10-2) as the second and third seeds, respectively. South Dakota (9-2) rounds out the top four seeds in a competitive field.
Other notable teams securing spots in the championship include UC Davis (10-2), Incarnate Word (10-2), Mercer (10-2), and Idaho (9-3), among others. With 23 schools having won a national title in the championship’s history, competition is expected to be fierce among the teams this year.
The tournament will consist of 10 automatic qualifiers and 14 at-large qualifiers, with unseeded teams paired with teams seeded 9-16 in the first round. Teams from the same conference will not be paired for first-round games, except in cases where they did not play each other during the regular season.
