California health officials have issued a warning against drinking a second lot of raw milk from Raw Farm LLC due to the bird flu virus. The affected lot has been recalled, and consumers are advised to return any remaining product to the store where it was purchased. Raw milk is not pasteurized, which poses a higher risk of foodborne illness. Bird flu can be spread through direct contact with infected dairy cows or consumption of raw milk. Since October, there have been 29 human cases of bird flu in California, with no person-to-person spread detected. Raw Farm stated that they test all milk in their pathogen lab to ensure it is free of pathogens. The CDFA has placed a quarantine on their herd, requiring all milk to be sold for pasteurization. Bird flu has been detected in 436 dairies in the state, with farms under quarantine until fully recovered and placed on a surveillance list for weekly testing. The nationwide outbreak of bird flu began in poultry in 2022 and spread to dairy cattle in 2024. Cases of infected livestock herds have been reported in California and Utah. Raw Farm is working with scientific partners to address the issue and return safe dairy products to stores.
