MHSA Board Decides on Football Realignment

Montana High School Association Makes Changes to Football Realignment

At a recent meeting, the Montana High School Association executive board made several decisions regarding realignment for high school football in the state. Broadus, Hays-Lodgepole, Harlowton-Ryegate, and Deer Lodge are among the schools approved to move classifications for the upcoming season.

Additionally, several schools were placed in higher football classifications after appeals were heard. These schools will have the option to participate fully in the higher classification or choose to participate in the lower classification but not be eligible for postseason play. Schools affected include Arlee, Box Elder, Centerville, Joliet, Shelby, and Westby-Grenora.

Whitehall-Harrison will be moving conferences in Class B football, while the executive board also approved a four-division alignment for Class A football. Class C basketball, track and field, and volleyball proposals were also approved, with final district decisions to be made at the 2025 MHSA Annual Meeting.

The executive board also submitted proposals for consideration at the annual meeting, approved the 2026-27 calendar, and made decisions regarding other matters such as baseball conferences, golf qualifying criteria, girls’ divisional wrestling, and football realignment procedures.

Additionally, the board approved the relocation of the MHSA office in Helena to a new site in the city, which will provide improved meeting facilities for staff and members. These decisions will be finalized at the January 2025 board meeting.
