A Laurel police officer was forced to fatally shoot a K-9 police dog belonging to the Montana Highway Patrol after it attacked a man on Thursday morning. The incident occurred on Wyoming Avenue, where the officer attempted various non-lethal methods to stop the attack with the assistance of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department’s Chief. However, due to the risk of endangering the victim and the public, the officer had to use his firearm to ultimately stop the attack. The victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital by the Laurel Ambulance Service. It is unclear why the Montana Highway Patrol K-9 was attacking the man, and whether a trooper from the agency was present at the scene. Laurel Police Chief Stanley J Langve provided details about the incident in a press release, emphasizing the necessity of the officer’s actions to protect the victim and prevent further harm.
