Cathy Roesler, a 69-year-old horse enthusiast, is living life to the fullest at the Miles City fairgrounds despite having a pacemaker that keeps her heart beating. Roesler’s journey began with irregular heartbeats and multiple surgeries, leading to the recommendation of a high-tech pacemaker known as the WATCHMAN. This device allows patients to safely get off blood thinners, providing stroke protection without the risks associated with long-term medication use.
Dr. William Dresen, an electrophysiology specialist at Billings Clinic, explained that the WATCHMAN implant is placed in the left atrial appendage to improve patients’ quality of life. Roesler, while still adjusting to the pacemaker, continues to pursue her passion for barrel racing with her horse, Booker. Despite feeling a bit short of breath at times, she is grateful for the confidence and freedom the pacemaker has given her.
