Multiple Cabinet nominees and administration appointees of President-elect Donald Trump were subjected to bomb threats and “swatting” attacks, according to a spokesperson for the Trump transition team. The threats included hoax calls claiming life-threatening situations were taking place, with the intention of drawing SWAT teams to the location. However, law enforcement officials stated that these threats were not credible, and no devices were found. The threats did not involve U.S. Secret Service protectees like Trump or Vice President-elect JD Vance.
The FBI is aware of the incidents and is working with law enforcement partners to address them. Among those targeted were Rep. Elise Stefanik, former Rep. Lee Zeldin, Brooke Rollins, and former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who withdrew his name from consideration for U.S. attorney general. Stefanik, Zeldin, and Rollins reported threats made against their families but confirmed they were unharmed.
Despite the threats, the Trump transition team stated that law enforcement acted quickly to ensure the safety of those targeted. The team also expressed gratitude for their swift action and emphasized that the threats would not deter them from continuing their work. Similar tactics have been used in the past against Trump adversaries, including judges and prosecutors involved in legal cases against him. The statements did not identify the exact number of officials targeted or provide specific details about the threats.
