Looking back at Montana’s 2024 election

Montana’s 2024 general election results have been finalized, with Governor Greg Gianforte securing a second term and Political newcomer Tim Sheehy unseating three-term U.S. Senator Jon Tester. Troy Downing won the Eastern District U.S. House seat, Ryan Zinke secured the Western District seat, and Austin Knudsen retained his position as Montana Attorney General. Christi Jacobsen won a second term as Secretary of State, and Susie Hedalen defeated Shannon O’Brien in the Superintendent of Public Instruction race.

In other races, James Brown defeated John Repke for Commissioner of Securities & Insurance. Two Montana Supreme Court races saw Cory Swanson and Katherine Bidegaray leading in votes. The three Constitutional Initiatives were also on the ballot; CI-126 was too close to call, CI-127 seemed likely to fail, and CI-128, which enshrines the right to an abortion in the Montana Constitution, passed with a majority of votes.

The election results indicate a mix of incumbents retaining their positions and newcomers shaking up the political landscape in Montana. Voters had important choices to make regarding the state’s leadership and constitutional issues, with some ballot measures still in contention post-election day. The close races and significant voter turnout underscore the importance of civic engagement and participation in the democratic process.
