Three bodies were recovered and 28 survivors were rescued after a tourist boat capsized off Egypt’s Red Sea coast on Monday. The boat, named Sea Story, was carrying 31 tourists and 13 crew members on a multi-day diving trip when it sank near the Sataya Reef. Authorities were still searching for 13 missing individuals. The incident occurred during rough weather conditions, with wave heights of 10-13 feet and wind speeds of 34 knots reported in the area.
The boat had passed its last safety inspection in March 2024, with no technical issues reported. Owned by an Egyptian national, the 100-foot vessel had received a one-year safety certificate from the Maritime Safety Authority. The survivors were accommodated in a hotel in Marsa Alam, where authorities were providing assistance and documentation with the help of embassies and consulates.
This was the second boat to sink in the area this year due to rough seas, though the first incident did not result in any casualties. The Red Sea is a popular tourist destination known for its coral reefs and marine life, playing a crucial role in Egypt’s tourism industry and economy. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the capsizing and are working to ensure the safety of future maritime activities in the region.
