An infant has died and 10 adults have fallen ill in a listeria outbreak connected to ready-to-eat meat products produced by Yu Shang Food, Inc. of Spartanburg, South Carolina. The outbreak has affected individuals in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and California, with all cases having Asian heritage. The infant who died, along with a twin sibling who also died, and their pregnant mother were all linked to the outbreak. Contaminated products were discovered during a routine inspection in October, leading to a recall in November. The products included a variety of prepared meats such as Braised Pork Belly and Seasoned Chicken Quarter Leg. Listeria can cause severe illness in vulnerable populations such as older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, headaches, confusion, and diarrhea. The CDC has issued a warning for anyone who may have consumed the recalled products to discard them immediately and thoroughly clean any surfaces where the products were stored. Listeriosis is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illnesses in the United States, highlighting the importance of food safety practices and recalls in preventing further outbreaks.
