Grizzly Marching Band Energizes Thousands at UM Football Games
MISSOULA, MT – The University of Montana’s marching band is electrifying one of the largest crowds in Montana, captivating over 26,000 fans each game day at Washington Grizzly Stadium. Members of the band, such as Abigail Binder, an alto saxophonist, have found the experience transformative, enhancing their friendship circles and musical skills.
The commitment required to be part of the marching band is significant, as students navigate complex routines and maintain perfect posture while performing. Binder acknowledges the challenge but reflects positively on the training and camaraderie the band fosters. Drumline member Zane Lambert emphasizes the time commitment, but both musicians recommend joining the band for the wealth of leadership experiences it offers.
Interestingly, participation isn’t limited to music majors; about half of the band’s members hail from various disciplines across campus, showcasing the diverse talent pool. Associate Director of Bands Dr. Kevin Griggs notes the band’s long-standing tradition, dating back to the late 1890s, and highlights the thrill of contributing to the game-day atmosphere.
This year, the Grizzly marching band has reached a record membership of nearly 150, thanks to its reputation for providing an energetic, fun-filled experience that resonates with fans. Binder emphasizes the lively energy they inject into the game, asserting that the music and the joy of playing contribute significantly to the overall excitement.
