A suspect has been identified in the murder of Belgrade man Dustin Kjersem, who was found brutally killed in the Moose Creek area near Big Sky on Oct. 12, 2024. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the suspect, currently in custody on unrelated charges, is cooperating with detectives and has led them to evidence related to the case. Sheriff Dan Springer stated that the suspect is believed to have acted alone and there is no longer a threat to the community. While the investigation is ongoing, outdoor activities can resume as the community is deemed safe.
Sheriff Springer commended his detectives for their dedication in pursuing justice in the case, working tirelessly with limited sleep and time for almost three weeks. The Sheriff’s Office will not provide further comments until charges are filed, and the suspect’s name has not been released. Sheriff Springer expressed gratitude to multiple agencies for their assistance on the case, including the Montana Department of Criminal Investigation, Montana State Crime lab, and others.
Dustin Kjersem was found dead in his tent with multiple chop wounds causing his death. His sister, Jillian Price, described him as a hard-working tradesman and a loving father who did not deserve his tragic fate. The community continues to mourn his loss, with hopes that the investigation efforts can bring some peace to his family during this difficult time.
