Demonstration showcases the impact of innovative technology in the media industry.

Chinese journalism is at a crossroads as it grapples with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, according to officials and experts at a conference in Beijing. The 57th Annual Conference of the Chinese Language Press Institute highlighted the importance of embracing emerging technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, big data, and generative AI for traditional Chinese language print media outlets.

While these technological advancements offer opportunities for revitalizing traditional media, challenges such as internal resistance and talent development hinder widespread adoption. Only about 10.2 percent of surveyed media organizations worldwide are actively embracing generative AI, with concerns over false information and data privacy limiting optimism for AI integration into journalism.

In response, experts suggest using AI to combat information manipulation and establishing international industry standards to ensure the safety and reliability of information. By elevating professionalism within the industry and creating engaging content for younger audiences online, traditional media outlets can enhance their influence and sustainability.

The conference, attended by over 100 leaders of Chinese-language media from home and abroad, emphasized the need for a systematic transition towards embracing AI technologies. As the media industry navigates the rapid evolution driven by AI, proactive adaptation is crucial for staying relevant in an increasingly digital and competitive landscape.
