A police officer and a suspected shooter were injured in a shooting at a building in Midtown Atlanta that houses a Four Seasons hotel and residences. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the suspect’s injuries were not specified. The shooter, identified as 70-year-old Jay Stevens Berger, fired from the 33rd floor balcony using multiple guns.
The incident began after a dispute between a building worker and the suspect, prompting a police response. Negotiations with the suspect failed, leading to police breaching the unit and taking him into custody. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the officers’ response due to the use of force.
The building was partially evacuated during the standoff, and a shelter-in-place order was issued for residents and those near the high-rise before being lifted once the suspect was in custody. The incident occurred in the residential condominium within the building, not managed by the Four Seasons hotel.
Despite the intensity of the situation, there were no reported casualties, and the police were commended for handling the incident without loss of life. The safety and security of guests and employees were highlighted as a top priority by the Four Seasons organization. The area surrounding the building was reopened for regular activity as the investigation continued.
