Montana voters overwhelmed by Senate race spending exceeding $250m

The 2024 election season in Montana has been marked by an overwhelming flood of political ads, with residents expressing frustration at the constant barrage of messages. The U.S. Senate race between Democratic incumbent Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy has become one of the most expensive campaigns in the country, exceeding $255 million in spending. Tester’s campaign has spent almost $79.2 million, while Sheehy’s has spent $21.9 million. Outside groups have contributed another $155 million in independent expenditures, almost evenly split between the two candidates.

Montana’s Senate race is ranked as the third most expensive congressional election this year, behind Ohio and Pennsylvania. However, when considering spending per voter, Montana surpasses both states with about $226 spent per person. Other races in Montana, including the congressional districts and the governor’s race, have also seen significant spending. The tone of political ads has been criticized by voters, who feel there is a lack of substance and intellectual discussion.

Despite the fatigue and frustration from the constant bombardment of political ads, a significant number of Montanans have already returned their absentee ballots, with more than a third of registered voters having voted by Oct. 28. With only a week left until Election Day, residents are looking forward to the end of the campaign season so they can return to their regular routines.
