Montana sheriffs react to Senator Jon Tester’s campaign ads

Recent political ads in support of Senator Jon Tester have sparked a conversation among rural law enforcement leaders in Montana. The ads claimed that Tester secured funding for county law enforcement programs, leading to public discussions among county sheriffs. However, some sheriffs have clarified that their offices are not endorsing Tester or any other candidate in the upcoming election. The Tester campaign provided documentation to support the claims made in the ads, including federal funds through Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) that compensate counties for federal land they cannot tax.

Nine sheriff’s offices have publicly commented on the ads, with some expressing dissatisfaction over the amounts mentioned in the ads. For example, in Roosevelt County, the ad claimed Tester secured $1.86 million for law enforcement, but the sheriff clarified that the actual amount received over the past five years was significantly lower. Despite the controversy, a Tester campaign spokesperson emphasized Tester’s commitment to keeping Montanans safe and working with law enforcement agencies to secure funding for their needs.

Most of the sheriffs who spoke out reiterated that they do not officially endorse any election candidates. The ads have brought attention to the importance of transparency in political advertising and the need for accurate information when discussing funding for law enforcement programs. The issue has highlighted the complexities of securing funding for rural law enforcement agencies and the challenges they face in serving their communities effectively.
